Dear Richard,

I read all the rude things some people say about America, I felt they are saying because America is christian country beating a Muslim one. I came from country were 55% of the population is Muslim (official religion). Virtually every Muslim friend of mine condemn USA and worship Saddam. They just can't see or don't want to see what Saddam did. For them it is Muslim vs Christians.

They have forgotten what USA did in world war II, when the japanese overan the country and chopping peoples head. As for you keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Dass

      Dear Dass,

I read your e-mail with great sadness. Religious prejudice is one of the most depressing facts of life in this world: Worship my God or I will destroy yours! That Muslims could look at Saddam Hussein as any kind of a hero simply because he is "Muslim" opposed by a "Christian" country does not say much about their reasoning process. It is amazing how Hussein dredges up religion to support himself in bad times (since the invasion of Kuwait) while presenting himself as a figure of secular Islam in earlier times (1970s and during Iran-Iraq war). Hussein is an opportunist and wily political survivor par excellence! Yet I have no doubt history will condemn Hussein as a scoundrel of the highest order and those who supported him as deluded at best and thick-headed at worst. All you have to do is look at starting various wars with his neighbors, gassing his own people, holding human "shields" as hostages, starting oil fires, raping Kuwait, etc. ad nauseam.

All governments perform nefarious activities - to one degree or another. What country's government at least once in awhile has not been worthy of the most vile insults? Yet Iraq and its leader Saddam Hussein set new lows even in the ignoble post WWII-era replete with two-bit dictators and garden-variety villains. Now he is playing the victim and blaming others for problems he has created for himself and his people (the true victims of this story - I think Hussein cares not one jot for his people. He could hardly have brought more suffering to them if he tried!). I challenge Hussein's supporters to give me a reasoned argument of how his life and work have brought more good than ill to the earth. I dare them.

All this about religion is a smoke screen. Saddam Hussein the exemplary Muslim! That is an insult to the millions of pious Muslims who live honest, dignified and decent lives. It is insulting to almost anyone who takes religion and the concept of "God" seriously.

Thank you for your comments, Dass. I am glad some people are able to see the forest for the trees. Taking a step back and looking at the large picture, I believe history will take your side in this issue.

      Very Truly Yours,

      Rich
